Keeping Window Vents & Door Seals Clean & Efficient

One of the things that we need to sort out well before the onset of winter weather is the sealant around windows and doors.  Although I have well fitting upvc frames and double glazed panels, I sometimes put the windows on the first lock to get much needed fresh air into the home.  Leaving the windows in this half locked position means that grubby bits of dust and dirt creep into the mechanism and around the edge of the slightly open portion, all the way round.   These need cleaning up before the windows are finally and firmly closed in winter.  Also, the air vents in the frame above the windows and doors.  These are strips of upvc which slide and tilt so that fresh air can come in through the vents in the wall.  In summer these are open all the time and it’s no problem.  A quick flick with a feather duster and the dust disappears.  However in the less clement weather lots of insects and grubs start settling in the slots – not only causing unsightly stains, but introducing moths and other unpleasant bugs into the home.  Wiping these down weekly will eradicate that little problem.
